jrtwitter Musicians On Twitter You Should Follow, And Some To Ignore

(ENS is moving this week, so we dug up this older post for your enjoyment.)

You will have to pardon this brief derail from the latest and greatest new music around as we take a peek into one of our newest obessions, Twitter. I know, old new right? Well, whether you are an early adopter or a longtime “tweeter” if you use it, you know the value it has.

This is by no means the first listing of musicians on twitter, and it won’t be the last, but this list is split up into categories, so you don’t waste your time following a musician that never updates their account.

Lets do it!

Musicians On Twitter NOT To Follow & Why (you gotta give these bands credit for being on Twitter, but either they don’t get it, or are run by promotional people with no intention of actually interacting with anyone.)

@willienelson – (Willie Nelson) – Don’t follow if you Willie, someone else does his updates and they are rare, although he is new to Twitter.
@bjork – (Bjork) – We love Bjork, but her twitter account is the equivalent of a robot. It follows everyone back yet never has a conversation with anyone.
@coldplay – (Coldplay) – Not run by the band, but brand new to Twitter. They seem to follow everyone back as well.
@oasisofficial – (Oasis) – Following nobody and not doing their own updates.
@snoopdogg – (Snoop Dog) – Following nobody and not doing his own updates.
@zosima – (My Brightest Diamond) – We love her, but she follows nobody, and we don’t think this is Shara updating. It is nice that they give out free show tickets via twitter though.

@common – (Common)
– Follows nobody and rarely updates.
@musewire – (Muse) – Following nobody, and nobody from the band does the updates.
@PearlJam – (Pearl Jam) – Not following anyone back, and seems to be a fan run account.
@theraconteurs – (The Raconteurs) – Not the band, probably fan or PR account, but at least they follow back.
@remhq – (R.E.M.) – Auto follow back, but only worth following if you want R.E.M. news updates
@billybragg – (Billy Bragg) – Rarely updates and never follows back
@yokoono – (Yoko Ono)
@beastieboys – (Beastie Boys) – Zero Updates, why have an account?
@mosdef – (Mos Def) – Looks like he gave up pretty fast, if this was ever him to begin with
@davidbowie – (David Bowie) – Jury is still out here, new with just one update, the real deal?

The Twitter All-Stars - (these are the best, most entertaining, and overall best musicians to follow on Twitter).

@johnroderick – (John from The Long Winters) – Witty and addicted to Twitter
@thesonicyouth – (Sonic Youth) – Insight into the recording process of the new album, how cool is that?
@qoolquest – (Questo Of The Roots) – Tweets like a madman, always fun to keep up with
@MCHammer – (MC Hammer) – The ever positive Hammer is a twitteraholic
@kristinhersh – (Kristin Hersh) – Does not follow back, but is entertaining and authentic
@qtiptheabstract – (Q-Tip) – Q-Tip often posts live video links to his practices, and is regular replier
@edwarddroste – (Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear) – Gotta love his profile that says “I will do this until I inevitably say something I regret and erase the profile. ”
@pampelmoose – (Dave Allen of Gang Of Four) Follows, chats and has lots of interesting stuff to share.
@DAChesterFrench – (D.A. of Chester French) – Loves to @reply to people, and follows back.
@skinnermike – (Mike aka The Streets) – Great at replying, love his back and forth stuff with @calvinharris
@colinmeloy – (Colin of The Decemberists) – Jumps to the all-star category due to his witty tweets and unarmed observations.

Best Of The Rest - Good Twittizens to follow, some are just getting the hang of things…

@foals – (Foals)

I’m surprised you missed @DaveJMatthews – Dave Matthews like Kristin Herch, he does not follow back, but is entertaining and authentic. And like Q-Tip he replies quite a bit.

Definitely a twitter all-star in the realm of musicians IMHO.

You didn’t mention @matthewebel or @geoffsmith – both are indie piano rockers who are truly authentic when it comes to their interaction with fans.

I’m surprised you haven’t got @alexwoolf on this list. He is extremely interesting to follow, and gives an insight into what composing and music making is like for younger people.

Good list, but,

You forgot the best singer/songriter in the world by now, the unknown portuguese Carlos Ruivo.
http://twitter.com/ruivo.
Should check him out on his website also:

Follow @ruivo he is sharing his songs for free and will be recording soon.

You ask why have an account if the (BeastieBoys)don’t use it… first thought that comes to mind is to prevent the inevitable “fake BeastieBoys” account from squating the account.
