How long has it been since you played your old copy of Pearl Jam’s debut album? Or better yet, do you even know where it is? If you were lucky enough to snag this classic on vinyl back when it was released, then kudos to you, but most of us were not as lucky. Well, now we can all get a copy because Pearl Jam’s excellent debut album, Ten, is being re-issued on high quality vinyl on March 24th and it’s a must have if you are a fan of PJ, or just have an appreciation for good records in general.
And here at ENS, we are pretty excited to be able to give away a copy of the re-issued album to you! This one is gonna be a comment contest, so give us your favorite Pearl Jam song of all time and a very short reason why. I will select a winner at the end of next week, so good luck! (Be sure to leave your email in the comment submission form, so we can reach you if you win) If your comment does not show up right away, give it a little time….
US residents only for this contest please.
In the meantime, take a shot at The Pearl Jam Ten Game and watch this video which gives more details about the re-issues.
Indifference off of vs. because Eddie’s voice is amazing in that song. Beautiful and haunting.
“Porch”
At 13 and at 31, it allows me embrace my rage unlike any other song.
Yesterday I tried entering, and the comment didn’t appear… at that point in time, I think my favorite Pearl Jam song was something like ‘Nothingman’… I’m having a hard time with this, hard to choose just one. Might as well stick with that for sake of discussion
the soundtrack for my teenage angst. and the second side was playing when i lost my virginity on wright patt AFB.
this record will always bring me back to that time of fumbling and wanting something more.
eek, favorite is “release.” just so beautiful…
“Elderly Women…”
“I just want to scream, HELLO!” Fantastic song, great lyrics on a topic that everyone can relate too. Countless drunken college nights wound down with this song.
lowlight from yield – i feel yield is criminally overlooked in the PJ catalog and ‘lowlight’ is my personal fav from that album
My favorite Pearl Jam song has to be No Way on Yield. My oldest friend painted an awesome picture of me and put the lyrics to the song on there, so I guess it’s kind of the Scott theme song. Also, that’s basically why I started listening to Pearl Jam, so I got both a gift of a painting and a gift of rocking music.
Garden – It’s got everything that makes Pearl Jam great. From the soft guitar intro all the way in to the growling and expansive eruptions that Pearl Jam does like no one else. I’ve driven alone many a night singing this at the top of my lungs and it can take me back to so many moments in an instant. Great track.
‘Nothingman’ – this song captures the pain and lonliness we’ve all felt when a relationship dissolves and we’re left with nothing. It touches anyone who has ever loved, been loved or has lost in love. Classic Pearl Jam.
As a teacher at The Paul Green School of Rock, I have introduced the classic, “Black” into my set-list for the “Best of the 90’s Show”. I remember the first time I heard this song and what it did for me. Nothing is more fulfilling to me than bringing a song like this to the next generation of rockers. These kids just went dead silent when I played it for them…awesome.
I have so many favorite Pearl Jam songs, but my all time favorite has to be “Yellow Ledbetter”. It first caught my attention because of McCreedy’s I-V-IV chord progression on his ‘Hendrix-esque’ Stratocaster. The unforgettable ‘lick’ is recognizable even after the first few notes. As a guitarist, I had to learn this.
However the song took on an entirely different meaning 3 years ago when my best friend (Josh) went to Iraq with the Army to fight as a blackhawk combat medic. That is when I listened to Vedder’s mumbled words for possibly the first time. The song is about receiving a yellow letter informing him that his brother had died in the war. The line that struck my heart was, “I think of him when I go to bed, and he’s coming home in a box or a bag.”
That song gave me some solace and peace during those 3 years Josh was in Iraq. He’s home now, thankfully with only emotional and psychological scaring, very little physical scars.
“Not For You” – I’ll never forget the fury with which they ripped through this on Saturday Night Live shortly after Kurt Cobain took his own life.

Tried this before… but it didn’t post?
“Present Tense”
Reason: I don’t think there was any one song that helped me more get over the pain of a divorce than this one. The lyrics reached right in and said “Hey, quit it. Live.”
