I have so many favorite Pearl Jam songs, but my all time favorite has to be “Yellow Ledbetter”. It first caught my attention because of McCreedy’s I-V-IV chord progression on his ‘Hendrix-esque’ Stratocaster. The unforgettable ‘lick’ is recognizable even after the first few notes. As a guitarist, I had to learn this.

However the song took on an entirely different meaning 3 years ago when my best friend (Josh) went to Iraq with the Army to fight as a blackhawk combat medic. That is when I listened to Vedder’s mumbled words for possibly the first time. The song is about receiving a yellow letter informing him that his brother had died in the war. The line that struck my heart was, “I think of him when I go to bed, and he’s coming home in a box or a bag.”

That song gave me some solace and peace during those 3 years Josh was in Iraq. He’s home now, thankfully with only emotional and psychological scaring, very little physical scars.

As a teacher at The Paul Green School of Rock, I have introduced the classic, “Black” into my set-list for the “Best of the 90’s Show”. I remember the first time I heard this song and what it did for me. Nothing is more fulfilling to me than bringing a song like this to the next generation of rockers. These kids just went dead silent when I played it for them…awesome.

‘Nothingman’ – this song captures the pain and lonliness we’ve all felt when a relationship dissolves and we’re left with nothing. It touches anyone who has ever loved, been loved or has lost in love. Classic Pearl Jam.

Garden – It’s got everything that makes Pearl Jam great. From the soft guitar intro all the way in to the growling and expansive eruptions that Pearl Jam does like no one else. I’ve driven alone many a night singing this at the top of my lungs and it can take me back to so many moments in an instant. Great track.

My favorite Pearl Jam song has to be No Way on Yield. My oldest friend painted an awesome picture of me and put the lyrics to the song on there, so I guess it’s kind of the Scott theme song. Also, that’s basically why I started listening to Pearl Jam, so I got both a gift of a painting and a gift of rocking music.
