Win Tickets To See Ryan Adams

Filed in Cincinnati, Giveaways and Music News 50 comments

Last week we helped get the word out that Ryan Adams was returning to Cincinnati for a show at the Taft Theatre. Adams recently announced a slew of tour dates, several of which are here in the midwest, in support of his excellent album Ashes & Fire. We love the record and recommend you grabbing it on vinyl at your local independent record store of choice, as it was recorded entirely with analog devices.

Well, today we have the privilege of putting up some tickets to the show, which takes place on January 28th.

To qualify for the tickets, I’m asking that you put your favorite Ryan Adams lyrics, from any album, in the comments here on ENS. I’ll choose one of your favorites and that person will win a pair of tickets to the show.

See her smiling at him?
That used to be me
I could find her in a thunderstorm
Just by the way that the rain would fall
And we used to be something
But somethin’ happened to me
Oh, my God, when I was free

Well, the night makes moves
And it shatters like broken glass
Better play it cool… better let it pass
Have you been screening your smokes?
And whispers in an all night bar
Better off as the fool
Than the owner of that kind of heart

The night plays games
And the people they come and go
Well, they trade in their pieces
For a late-night ride on your rodeo
If your horses could talk,
I wonder if they would complain
I know you’re rested and ready
They’ve been going nowhere for days …

As much as I wanted to pick “Guitar Solo!” in Halloween Head, I’ll go with:

“I ain’t never been to Vegas but I gambled up my life
Building newsprint boats I race to sewer mains
Was trying to find me something but I wasn’t sure just what
Funny how they say that some things never change”

The first thing that came to my mind was of course “Come Pick Me Up’ but that’s been posted already several times, so my ‘back-up’ Plan B is this:

I heard your wrists got bruised
Must’ve felt just like old times
I wish you would’ve grabbed the gun
And shot me ’cause I died
And I’m nothing now without you
yeah, I’m less than nothing now

I’m the one between the bars and lost forever now
‘Cause it’s over now

It’s harder now that it’s over
It’s harder now that it’s over
Now that the cuffs are off
And you’re free
You’re free with a history

I’m sorry

— from “Harder Now That It’s Over”

As a complete aside, when I saw Ryan perform this song live back in the day (probably 03 or 04), at the very end when he finishes the song with “I’m Sorry”, he sneak in after that “But Not Really” with a quick whisper, haha!

Laura lays on the foot of the bed, mimics a noose with a telephone cord
Doctor’s on the phone then she hangs up and says “I ain’t never gonna see the winter again”
And I don’t know how, but she smiles

They carved your name into the stone and then they put it in the ground,
I run my fingers through the grooves when no one’s around
Drink till I am sick and I talk to myself in the dog days of the summer
Then I feel you coming but I don’t know how
September, September

Well, Jacksonville’s a city with a hopeless streetlight
Seems like you’re lucky if it ever change from red to green.
I was born in an abundance of inherited sadness
And .50 cent picture frames bought at afive and dime

I ended up asoldier on the weekend
Looking for a vacancy I wasn’t able to find
Somewhere the night sky hangs like a blanket
Shoot it with my capgun just to make it Seem like stars
