WOXY Goes Silent – My Thoughts

Filed in Uncategorized 15 comments

When you get an opportunity to work for a station that you are a huge fan of, you take it. That is what was presented to me three and a half years ago after WOXY was revived by lala.com and needed to fill a hole in woxy WOXY Goes Silent My Thoughtstheir on-air lineup. Without any radio experience, but tons of music experience, I somehow fit the need and even up until now, I felt like I somehow cheated the system in order to get this job.

Today, WOXY went silent just after 10 am ET. It hurt alot more than I was expecting it to. All of us at the station have poured ourselves into making this the best thing we could. We all loved our jobs and wanted nothing more than to continue doing it for our listeners. The move to Austin was not an easy one, but the city embraced us and we are incredibly grateful. I have always said that if it all ended tomorrow, I would have no choice but to be grateful for the time I had, and I am.

For those of you that follow me on twitter or facebook, you know that music is a huge part of my life and being able to do it in this environment with good people like Shiv, Mike, Bryan Jay, Brian and Paige has been amazing.

And the thing is, a glimmer of hope has to exist for all of us based on history alone. Nobody is holding their breath that WOXY will be back, but none of us can close the door completely just yet either. That being said, I am hoping my friends and contacts will get in touch with me if you have a lead on anything I might be able to help you do. Yeah, I know, everyone needs a job, well, I’m getting in line.

Thanks for all the heartfelt responses. We have always said that if we could turn your goodwill into cash, we could do this forever. icon smile WOXY Goes Silent My Thoughts

Thinking of you Joe & all other WOXY team members as well as their families. This closure is different than in the past for me because my of my involvment here at ENS. When one door closes, another one opens. I’m sure something will present itself and things will work out.

Wow Joe! Sorry to hear that this happened but glad to hear how positive and satisfied you are with the experience that you have had. I will definitely keep an ear out and keep you, Julie and the boys in our prayers. Let me know if there is anything else that I can do for you!

It is, by far, the worst thing that happened in 2010.

It’s sad to see Woxy going away again… It was a huge part of my musical life since I found it out on the iTunes radio years ago…

I trully hope it comes back again and again. It’s what the radio deserve. It’s what we deserve. And it’s what the independent musicians need.

Lots of musical love to the Woxy staff.

Joe,

In the grand scheme of things, my stay at woxy was very short. But in less than a year’s time, you and the others somehow managed to have a significant impact on my life, just as you have on many others’. There’s always been something special about The Future of Rock and Roll, something that makes it more than your typical ‘alternative rock’ station. There’s a spirit and a community behind it. You guys aren’t DJs who listen to good music, you’re music fanatics who happen to be handed a microphone. Having the opportunity to be a part of that, even briefly, changed the way I viewed music.

This is tough news, but I know each of you will overcome this quickly, either individually or collectively. In the mean time, there are lots of us who wish to help however we can.

Thanks for everything,

Ben

Incredibly sad day for indie-music, and for Cincinnati. I feel horrible for the guys, all of whom uprooted family and moved to Austin. And this is the thanks you get barely 6 months later? Outrageous.

Joe, thanks for the memories. It’s been a pleasure having you on WOXY these last 3 1/2 years. You will not even begin to understand what a void this will leave for me (and I’m guessing for many others).

It was incredibly tough for us here in Cincinnati to accept when you guys packed up and moved to Austin, but we all thought, hey, if this is what is needed for the station to survive, so be it and godspeed to you. To now see the station die yet again, and only so short after the move, I just feel sick. The whole thing now feels like someone stole away a Cincinnati icon and institution, and then let it die on the vine only months later.

I wish nothing but the best for you and Shiv and Mike and Brian. You guys did not deserve this. Neither did we the fans and listeners.

This is extremely saddening news. Thank you for everything WOXY was and did. I’m sorry things turned out this way, but I sincerely hope amazing good somehow comes out of it for you and the rest of the WOXY staff.

Keep yr head up!!

It’s a bum deal anyway you slice it. Hopefully one door closing opens another.

What you were apart of was an amazing legacy and even though it was too short, you, Shiv, and Mike have done the independent music scene a great service. You broadcasted to listeners all over the world and shared your passion. Fans of WOXY are not just fans of the music, but the people exposing us to it. I hope you all know that you really have made an impact in music history. Thank you.

Dammit. This is the second time I lost ‘OXY in my life. granted I just found WOXY on the web about 3 weeks ago so this lose is not as bad as when the studios in Oxford, OH went silent after decades of great music (both as WOXR and WOXY) and bing fpr about 10 years my all time favorite radio station.

What you guys were doing was pretty close to the real thing (97x outta beautiful Oxford, OH), it’s a shame it is now gone.
