woxy WOXY.com , The Future Of HD Radio

No, that is not a new official tagline for WOXY.com, but it sounds kinda nice. And yes, it is indeed true, outside of the official press release, the news leaked out about WOXY.com’s plans to partner with the good folks over at WVXU here in town to launch a new HD channel.

The basics for fans of the station here in Cincy is that you will be able to get WOXY back in your car, at home or really almost anywhere. And you no longer have to rely on the internet to do so. This will give some long time listeners a chance to hear the WOXY signal better than they ever have before. If you are like me, you had to drive to a certain area of town or there was a spot in your house where you got your old 97X signal better than others, but crystal clear was not the norm for the station that was then broadcasting our of Oxford, OH.

And the early reports are very positive, as most people seem to feel that this could be a nice little spike for HD radio sales here in the tri-state area.

Of course, I have known of this news for some time now, so it feels great that it is now public and people are excited the way we all are at the station. The broadcast start date has not been announced yet, but should hopefully be sometime next month, so stay tuned. And in the meantime, educate yourself about HD radio…..

Hey Pocket Radio —

You don’t speak for me…ya twat. Please don’t act as though you are the mouthpiece for all consumers.

Bobby,

Only radio-geeks have bought HD radios and iBiquity is already considering other alternatives to HD/IBOC:

“Finally, A Good Use for HD Radio”

“That’s why I was happy to hear that even the folks at iBiquity are looking at other options.”

Even Sony can’t save HD Radio:

“Can Sony Make HD Radio A Winner?”

“So, the old consumers don’t want HD. Young consumers think the concept is laughable. Big retailers can’t sell it. And radio companies won’t invest in it. Sounds like a winner to me.”

One last comment – with the looming, outrageous Internet Royalty fees, who will be paying for the streaming – the fees will put a lot of Internet streamers out of business, and the HD channels are also subject to the fees, but with so few HD listeners (in the tens-of-thousands), HD ad revenue will never materialize.

Pocket, in case you had not heard, SoundExchange is not enforcing the new royalties, so the pressure is off. And there have never been streaming fees for terrestrial or HD radio as far as I know….

Even if they are, it will not be the increase that was feared.
